What changes for you
Location, the networks you pass, your ad ID, which apps you open and when — on a normal phone all of it quietly flows back all day. GrapheneOS is the same Android you know, with the tracking taken out and the security turned up.
It stops following you around
A phone is the one device that goes everywhere you do. GrapheneOS strips out Google’s tracking and randomises your Wi-Fi identity for every network, so shops and networks can’t quietly trace your movements through the day.
Google is out — your apps aren’t
Install the normal catalogue — banking, messaging, streaming, socials — through the Aurora Store with no Google account. Play runs sandboxed with no special powers, so even banking apps work. Around 99% behave exactly as now.
You decide what each app can touch
Cut any app off from the internet, or let it see only the one photo or contact you pick. Deny an app the sensors and it simply gets zeros back. That kind of control stock Android just doesn’t give you.
Locked down the moment it leaves your hand
The USB-C port goes charging-only when the phone is locked (blocking data-port attacks), and it auto-reboots back to a fully-encrypted state. The flaws spyware leans on are shut off by default.
It runs on a Google Pixel — ironically the best de-Googled phone is a Google phone, because Pixels ship with the security hardware GrapheneOS builds on. We can supply one ready to go, or convert yours.
Built by someone who refused to sell you out
GrapheneOS isn’t a product with a business model. Developer Daniel Micay started it in 2014 as serious security research. When his commercial backer pushed to monetise the work — including licensing it to enterprise and government — the two fell out over control of the cryptographic keys that authorise every software update.
Rather than risk those keys being used to push a compromised update to users, he destroyed them and rebuilt the project from scratch as an independent, community-run non-profit. He then kept it going through years of personal harassment — including repeated “swatting” attacks — before handing stewardship to the GrapheneOS Foundation.
That persistence is the point. The phone in your pocket runs on a project that has already been tested — by money, by pressure, by intimidation — and chose its users every single time.
Tap-to-pay with the phone doesn’t work
This is the single genuine day-to-day trade-off. Google won’t authorise contactless on GrapheneOS, so paying with the phone isn’t available. Your physical cards still tap exactly as they do today. In Australia only the CommBank app currently works around it; we’ll tell you honestly what works where you are.
